Virat Kohli has gone 71 innings in international cricket without scoring a century since his 136 against Bangladesh in Kolkata in November 2019. Although he started many times, he could not convert them into big results. Kohli has passed fifty 22 times since his last innings in Kolkata, but is yet to complete his 71st international century. Hardly anyone can complain about Kohli’s T20I numbers – he has 846 runs at 145.11 and an average of 56.40. It could be argued that he was denied a table in that format by his short form alone (he was unbeaten in a series of 73, 77 and 80 against England in Ahmedabad earlier last year). His ODI form has also been excellent: he has ten fifties in his last 19 innings, four of which have come in consecutive matches. No other tester is subjected to so much scrutiny while passing through such a fruitful line.

However, Kohli has been dismissed in each of the 49 innings since his last century in Tests and ODIs, so perhaps unlike in T20Is, he has not missed time in those innings. It has been a very long drought for Kohli considering he is in the top four in these formats. For a man who has achieved the high standard of turning every alternate fifty into a century in Tests and ODIs (he is yet to make a T20I hundred), this thin section comes off as painful. The longest innings streak in men’s Tests and ODIs is Kieran Powell’s 94 innings. Including Powell, there have been 22 other instances in Tests and ODIs where batsmen like Kohli have been dismissed before scoring a hundred in consecutive innings of 49 or more. However, in none of these cases did these batsmen reach Kohli’s average of 32.57. Among these 22 other batsmen, the closest to Kohli’s average is Alec Stewart, who has scored a hundred in 49 consecutive innings without a hundred at an average of 27.49.

It’s not the worst drought cricket has seen in a century, but Kohli was unlike any other batsman before him to open conversions. Consider this – in seven separate 49 innings of Tests and ODIs from August 2017 to January 2019, Kohli has made 17 per cent. That’s 26 or 27 times over 50 in 49 innings. Kohli has played 71 innings without scoring an international century, including T20Is. Compare this to his best run of 71 innings in international cricket – enjoyed at various times – with 19 hundreds. Don Bradman made 28 per cent of his 71 Tests during World War II. Sachin Tendulkar made 19 per cent in 71 innings in Tests and ODIs from March 1998 to November 1999. Only these are as good as or better than Kohli. This is the norm that Kohli fans are used to.
