President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday inaugurated the Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket stadium at Motera, Ahmedabad. Formerly known as the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium, the rebuilt stadium can accommodate 1,32,000 people, 10,000 more than the previous largest stadium, the Melbourne Cricket Ground. While inaugurating the stadium, President Ram Nath Kovind said that India is known as cricket powerhouse or cricket center. So it is fitting that India has the world’s largest cricket stadium today. He appreciated the efforts made by the state government and the Gujarat Cricket Association to build the stadium.
Noting that a large number of young cricketers come from inner villages and towns, the President said that the youth should be encouraged to perform well in other sports as well. It is significant that Gujarat has taken the initiative to build an international level sports complex on the premises of the Narendra Modi Stadium, which will serve as a multi-sports venue and provide facilities for hosting national and international events.
Talking about the sports complex in his speech, Home Minister Amit Shah said that Modi has given me a gift by setting up international infrastructure and training facilities in his Lok Sabha constituency. Shah said that the proposed 233-acre Sardar Patel Sports Complex will be ready for any sports event in future. The complex will cost Rs 4,500 crore and the state has allotted land for the project.
