39 years ago today, Team India won its first ODI World Cup title by beating a red-hot West Indies in the 1983 final. The face of Indian cricket changed when the Kapil Dev-led team won at Lord’s.

The pre-tournament favorites were West Indies, England and Australia. India overcame the odds to win the prestigious title by beating England in the semi-finals and West Indies in the final.
India faced Australia and West Indies twice in the group stage and recorded one win and one loss against the two heavyweights. But their most memorable series-clinching win came in the quarter-finals, where they beat Zimbabwe by 31 points with the help of a Kapil Dev special.
First World Cup Winners Cricket
India, who batted first, did not get off to a good start. They lost star opener Sunil Gavaskar after just two runs. Kris Srikkanth (38 off 57 balls) and Mohinder Amarnath (26 off 80 balls) played some good cricket to put India’s innings ahead. However, their dismissals led to a collapse in the batting as India were bowled out for 183 in 54.4 overs.
Apart from Srikkanth and Amarnath, Sandeep Patil was the only player to cross the 20-run mark. He scored 27 runs from 29 deliveries and became India’s second highest run-getter after Srikkanth.
183 was not an impressive target, especially against two-time defending champions West Indies, who featured Desmond Haynes, Vivian Richards and Clive Lloyd.
However, India did the impossible against the West Indies by scoring 142 in 52 overs and winning by 43 runs.
First World Cup Winner In Cricket
While Balwinder Sandhu scalped two wickets, Kapil and Roger Binny picked one wicket each. This victory is considered to have revolutionized Indian cricket and the rest is history. Eight teams took part in the tournament: Australia, East Africa, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies. Matches were played in five stadiums in England.

New Zealand’s Glenn Turner was the only player to score consecutive double centuries in the 1975 World Cup, comfortably topping the scoring charts.
Almost 50% of his scores in the tournament came against East Africa on the opening day, with a stunning knock of 171* remaining his highest score of the tournament.

His 36 runs against the West Indies in the semi-final helped him edge out nearest rival Dennis Amiss as he scored 90.
He may have only played two matches in the 1975 World Cup, but the late Gary Gilmour finished as the player with the most wickets in the tournament.
A left-arm batsman, he came into the side for Australia’s semi-final against England in Leeds and took his side to the final with a remarkable figure of 6/14 from 12 overs.
He continued his form by taking 5/48 in the representative match against West Indies at Lord’s, but could not prevent the Windies from dominating.

Format: The team was divided into two groups of four people each. Each team faced the remaining three teams in its group once, and the top two teams from each group advanced to the semi-finals. The team that came first in Group A faced the team that took second place in Group B.
Semi-final: The first semi-final between England and Australia was completely dominated by left-arm wicket bowler Gary Gilmour. In what turned out to be his third and third final ODI, he claimed 6/14 to reduce England to 93 all out. In response, the home team mounted a strong comeback to reduce Australia to 39/6. Gilmour survived an early drop catch to top score with a 28 not out as his side won by four wickets.
The second semi-final was a slightly calmer affair. New Zealand came first with 158 points, while Geoff Howarth received the highest score with 51 points. Bernard Julien and Vanburn Holder shared seven wickets between them. Gordon Greenidge and Alvin Kallicharran scored 50 each and combined for a 125-run second wicket stand to break the chase. Richard Collinge’s 3/28 started the slide from 133/1 to 151/5, but it was too late and the West Indies reached the final with five wickets and 20 overs in hand.
When Was First World Cup Cricket Held
Final: The first men’s World Cup final was played at Lord’s between the West Indies and Australia and remains one of the most exciting finals in representative cricket today. Windies skipper Clive Lloyd was the star who picked the perfect moment to create his ODI century. His 85-ball effort set the headquarters on fire and rescued his team from a precarious 50/3. His side also had half-centuries from Rohan Kanhai and half-centuries and seven-wicket stands from Keith Boyce and Bernard Julien, who helped the West Indies improve from 209/6 to 291/8. Playing in what turned out to be his second ODI, Gary Gilmour backed up his semi-final heroics with another five-wicket haul.
West Indies held the upper hand throughout the chase, but a half-century from skipper Ian Chappell and solid support from the rest of the Australian batsmen allowed them to remain in the hunt. It was their fielding that set the West Indies apart throughout the game, and their five runs out remains a joint ODI record in a single game. In a rare failure with the bat, Viv Richards made her mark on the biggest stage with two direct strikes and a joint effort with Clive Lloyd. Keith Boyce was also featured on 4/50. Although the result had to be decided at 233/9, a fight between former ruckmen Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lillee kept the team’s hopes alive until the former fell 18 runs short of victory.
