Virat Kohli Goes Hammer & Tons
Kohli said it was “difficult to get bowlers” on the spin-friendly track in Kolkata, but he knew he had to lead the team to the end.
“When you’re two wickets down and you don’t have [injured all-rounder] Hardik Pandya in the team, you have to bat to a certain level,” he told the home broadcaster after India’s innings.
“Every opportunity to play for India is huge for me and to do it on my birthday – in front of my home crowd – is a dream come true!”

Well played by Virat. It took me 365 days to go from 49 to 50 earlier this year. I hope you will reach 49 to 50 in the next few days and beat my record. Congratulations!#INDvSA pic.twitter.com/PVe4iXfGFk — Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) November 5, 2023
As Kohli drove the ball through the cover of South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada to complete his 100th run, the cricket writer and commentator said Kohli was “writing his own script” as he celebrated his birthday and his home World Cup. Earlier, India coach Rahul Dravid had insisted that Kohli is “really focused” on winning the World Cup rather than personal and professional achievements.
“I think Virat has really relaxed and as you can see from his performance, he has batted really well for us,” Dravid said at the pre-match press conference on Saturday.
“I didn’t notice anything different. He’s always been that way. He’s always been professional, always hardworking, always proactive.

When it was suggested that the match could be a dress rehearsal for the final to be held in Ahmedabad on November 19, Dravid was cautious. When Virat Kohli finally brought up his 48th ODI century by hitting Bangladesh’s Nasum Ahmed, the crowd at the MCA Stadium in Pune erupted in jubilation.

Kohli capped his unbeaten innings with 103 off 97 balls in India’s seven-wicket win against Bangladesh on Thursday, their fourth consecutive win in the tournament.
Meanwhile, on social media, cricket fans and pundits reflected on India’s batting pattern in the last few innings.
As the former India captain reached 81, he refused to play at least five singles and his batting partner Rahul later explained why.
“He (Kohli) was confused, he said, ‘It wouldn’t look very good not to take one, it’s still the World Cup and it’s still a big stage. I don’t want to look like that,” Rahul told the tournament’s broadcaster. I’m just trying to hit milestones.

“But I said, I don’t think it’s won, but still I think we’re going to win pretty easily, so if you can hit the milestone, then why not, you should try. And finally, they did. I wasn’t going to. release the single anyway.”
The biggest problem was that when India were two runs short of the target of 257 runs and Kohli 97 runs, Ahmed hit a ball that flew outside Kohli’s leg side but umpire Richard Kettleborough did not signal it wide.
Cricket writer Peter Della Penna wrote in the post: “A stone cold down the leg side not given by the umpire who smiles afterwards.”

“If Kohli wants to refuse to take singles to reach a century, so be it, but it creates fairness issues when the umpire refuses to call the side to help Kohli in his individual innings Is.”
World Cup 2023: Virat Kohli Knows He’s In Form And Will Score Consistently, Says Mohammad Kaif
If Kohli refuses to play singles with 7 wickets and 10 overs to go to score a hundred, then if I’m a Bangladeshi bowler I’ll bowl 5 down the leg side. There will be no more ‘playing for the national team’ nonsense from any cricketer big or small. — Peter Della Penna (@PeterDellaPenna) October 19, 2023
One sarcastic comment described the race between Kohli’s century and India’s target as “the first close game of this World Cup”.
Others said that Kohli had the right to dictate the tempo of the game because, as he liked, “India will never lose”.
Totally disagree with this. 1. India was never going to lose. 2. It is highly unlikely that they will need NRR to differentiate themselves from other teams in the table. 3. This century made his fans happy. 4. Round numbers are good and generally appreciated. what is the problem? #CWC23 https://t.co/GBuVbsxc3P — Dan Liebke (@LiebCricket) October 20, 2023

However, former Pakistan bowler Wasim Akram praised Kohli for shifting gears with ease as he came close to his first century in this World Cup and his third in all World Cup matches.
“They (Kohli and Rahul) enjoyed the batting, mixing with the bowlers with a healthy run rate,” Akram said when asked about Kohli’s criticism on a TV show after the match.
Akram said, “When he (Kohli) was in the 80s and 90s, despite bowling 50 overs, he was running quick doubles, which is unbelievable.”

The 34-year-old scored his last century against Pakistan at the 2015 Cricket World Cup, but former India batsman Mohammad Kaif said Kohli was an expert in the “art of ODI scoring”.
