On this day in 1990, Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar scored a fifty against Sri Lanka in Pune to herald his arrival in the international arena. Tendulkar smashed his maiden ODI half-century in the second ODI of the three-match series between India and Sri Lanka. It must be said that Tendulkar scored his first fifty in one day, a year after his ODI debut in 1989 against Pakistan.
Interestingly, he was only 17 at the time, making him the youngest player to achieve this feat. Tendulkar’s record stood high among many other records for nearly two decades before the arrival of young Indian Shafali Verma in 2019.
Tendulkar scored 53 runs from 41 balls with the help of four fours and a six as India defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets. Tendulkar was also active on the field after Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin asked the visitors to bat first to take advantage of the dampness of the field. In Sri Lanka’s first innings, the leading right-hander was involved in five direct dismissals.
Apart from taking the wickets of Dammika Ranatunga and Roshan Mahanama with his medium pace bowling, Tendulkar also excelled on the field. He took the fish from Asanka Gurusinha and Rumesh Ratnayake. He also touched Sri Lankan batsman Arjuna Ranatunga, who scored 58 runs off 27 balls.
Sachin Tendulkar Odi Wickets
Despite the tough conditions on the Pune ground, Sri Lanka managed to score 227 runs for the loss of eight wickets in ten overs. In reply, India won the match by six wickets with 21 balls to spare.
Chasing 228 to win, Indian openers Ravi Shastri (53 runs off 88 balls) and Navjot Singh Sidhu (38 runs off 63 balls) gave the home team a head start as they added 76 runs in the first innings. However, back to back Shastri and Sidhu put India in a difficult position as Tendulkar and Azharuddin (52 runs off 49 balls) finished the match in style. Home » Home Cricket » News
