His first taste of international cricket turned into more regular opportunities two years later and he hasn’t looked back since. As he completes his 16th year in international cricket, we look at his century progress, logging each of his 80 international hundreds over the years.
In his debut year, Kohli made zero centuries across formats in international cricket. He played five matches and recorded his highest score of 54. But the century did not happen until 2009. After two half-centuries in the year, Kohli ended 2009 with his fourth century in international cricket – 107 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata. He followed that up with three tons in 2010, including one in January against Bangladesh in ODIs and two in a row at the end of the year against Australia and New Zealand, again in ODIs.

In the World Cup year, Kohli scored 100* against Bangladesh in Dhaka and after the World Cup, he registered his first ton outside the subcontinent in Cardiff against England. He followed it up with another ton against the same opposition in Delhi and finished with 117 against the West Indies in Vizag. The four tons, all in ODIs, were recorded in 2011.
2012 may have been the year that transformed Kohli into the beast he is now. He recorded eight centuries in the year, including his first Test ton in Adelaide against Australia. He made two more Test tons that year – both at home, against New Zealand and England. In ODIs, he recorded his highest score, a mammoth 183 against Pakistan in Dhaka. He also recorded three ODI tons against Sri Lanka in the same year.
Six centuries were scored in 2013 including ODI tons in Zimbabwe and the West Indies and a Test ton against South Africa in Johannesburg. He also made a Test century against Australia in Chennai.
Kohli made 19 centuries between 2014 and 2016 and was recognized as the world’s best batsman in all formats. He started 2014 with an ODI ton against New Zealand in Napier. A Test ton in Wellington followed, but the highlight of the year was his exceptional Test series in Australia, where he made three tons – 115 and 141 in Adelaide and 169 in Melbourne.
Five Incredible Stats Behind Kohli’s Epic Century Against Pakistan
He continued that trend in 2015 and made his fourth ton in the Australian series in Sydney. A World Cup century against Pakistan followed. A Test hundred in Galle against Sri Lanka and an ODI century against the Proteas at home completed a fantastic 2015 for him.
Centuries followed in 2016 as well, when he recorded seven across formats, including a maiden double century against the West Indies. Two more double tons followed in the year – against New Zealand and England.
In the peak years in international cricket for Virat Kohli, 2017 and 2018, he scored a remarkable 22 international hundreds, including 10 in Test cricket alone. 2017 also saw a double ton against Bangladesh and a back-to-back double century against Sri Lanka at home. He also scored ODI tons against England and West Indies in 2017, but Sri Lanka was his primary target. Two ODI tons, two Test hundreds and two Test double hundreds were recorded in 2017 against Sri Lanka alone.
In 2018, he scored three ODI hundreds in a six-match series in South Africa after a gutsy Test ton on the same tour in Centurion. Two Test tons were also recorded in England before a hat-trick of ODI tons against the Windies followed at home. In Australia, he recorded Test tone in Perth.

As cricket slowly returns to normalcy in 2021 with teams playing and traveling in bio-safe bubbles due to Covid-19, Kohli has failed to score a single hundred for India in 2021.
