In the 1975 World Cup he made 201 against East Africa in Birmingham and 177 against India in Manchester. The most interesting name on the list is Sunil Gavaskar, who faced 174 more deliveries than Rohit for England’s 36-match unbeaten run at Lord’s in the 1975 World Cup.

Seven years ago today, India opener Rohit Sharma set Eden Gardens on fire with a record double century in an ODI against Sri Lanka. The valiant opener smashed 264 in Kolkata, which remains the highest ever score in the limited overs format.

Popularly known as ‘The Hitman’, Rohit surpassed compatriot Virender Sehwag’s 219 to become the highest score in ODIs as the Mumbai Indians captain smashed 173 runs to score 264 runs, including 33 fours and nine glorious sixes. Rohit is the only batsman to have scored three double tons in ODI cricket.
India scored 404/5 in 50 overs and then restricted Sri Lanka to 251 to clinch the fourth ODI. In 2010 against South Africa, Sachin Tendulkar became the first player to score a double century in the 50-over format.
On this day in 2014, @ImRo45 scored 264 off 173 balls, the highest individual score in ODIs.

Rohit was announced as India’s T20I captain earlier this week and will now take the lead after Virat Kohli stepped down as captain in the shorter format. Kohli participated in the T20 World Cup as his last assignment as captain in the shortest format of the game.
KL Rahul was appointed as the vice-captain. Ruturaj Gaikwad, Harshal Patel, Venkates Iyer, Avesh Khan, Axar Patel have also been named for the series against New Zealand. New Zealand will play the T20I series and then follow it up with two Test matches.
The T20Is will be played in Jaipur on November 17, in Ranchi on November 19 and in Kolkata on November 21. The two Tests will be played in Kanpur (November 25-29) and Mumbai (December 3-7).

In doing so, he wrote his name in the history books with the highest score in ODI cricket and became the only batsman to date to score two doubles in the 50-over format. It was a stunning knock by the opener that opened the game for India. The hosts then bowled out the visitors for 251 to take a 4-0 lead in the series. After India elected to bat, Rohit, who will open with Ajinkya Rahane, was frustrated at the prospect of sending the Sri Lankans back by four wickets. The opener, Thiara Perera, who opened the airway, was dropped by third man.

Rohit, returning to the side after a lifelong injury, bided his time in a crunch and ended his innings afterwards. Rahane, meanwhile, started the hosts off by milking Nuwan Kulasekar in the first over. He hit the bowler four times over square leg and claimed two more boundaries as he collected 14 runs from his over. He continued to be aggressive until the 28th over against Angelo Mathews. After 19 runs, Ambati Rayudu saw the wicket off a delivery bowled by Shaminda Eranga.
Then Virat Kohli and Rohit formed the Indian batting innings. Seeing the magnitude of the attack in Sri Lanka, they formed a partnership and created a large number of platforms. After taking his team past three figures, Rohit quickly brought up his fifty off 72 deliveries in a single. From there there was no looking back. He came to those who fled and found his place, claiming a border almost everywhere. Kohli took the batting power in the 30th over as Rohit looked for a bigger hit. The pair played themselves, removed the attack for five days and built up the rest of the game. Rohit smashed Kulasekara for a four and then ended his innings with a six over the wicket. A few moments later, Rohit, who switched gears, reached his 100 in the multi-run. He took India past 200 and scored 57 runs in this period.
The partnership continued to flourish as Rohit continued to dismantle the SL attack. The opener shifted into fifth gear and started running at a brisk pace for India. With fielding errors to add to their woes, the visitors were at sea managing the opening innings. With Kohli on his fifty, Rohit, a top-order batsman, reached 150 off just 125 deliveries. However, three balls later with a partnership of 202, Kohli finished with a second run.
Moments later, Mahela Jayawardene’s brilliant catch sent back Suresh Raina, who attacked from the 11th over. With more than ten overs to go, Robin Uthappa and Rohit made the hosts an insurmountable target.
