The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCC) on Tuesday announced India’s 15-member squad for the 2023 World Cup, which begins on October 5. The Regency in Kandy came as no surprise as KL Rahul was included after being declared fit by the National Cricket Association (NCA). Rahul is expected to join the rest of the Indian squad for the Super 4 stage of the 2023 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. This is the second time in two years that Samson was in danger of winning the World Cup but fell short. Last year, he was in the same position and India opted for Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik in the T20 World Cup despite a three-way battle for the wicketkeeper’s spot. Almost 10 months later, nothing has changed, Samson is back in the process of breaking Ishaan’s newborn baby, and Rahul is back in good shape.
The remaining spots in the squad were easy to fill. Rohit will lead the team, which will have a star line-up of Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill. Among the fast bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami and Mohammad Siraj all found their place, while Shardul Thakur played in the middle order due to his ability to strengthen the lower order.

India have sprung a big surprise in the ICC World Cup 2023 squad by opting not to name players who will stand or save.

India has refrained from naming stand-by or reserve players, a common practice in international tournaments and ICC events, for the upcoming World Cup at home.
India’s World Cup 2023 squad announced on Tuesday by selectors Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma at a press conference in Kandy, Sri Lanka, is on target, but not surprising. Does it have any meaning? Let’s explain it. The 15-man squad, or in other words, the main squad, is not surprising at all. KL Rahul has also been recalled to the team. Suryakumar Yadav was sent back in place of Sanju Samson while Ishan Kishan was picked as the opener and keeper.
All-rounders Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and spinner Kuldeep Yadav have been picked as fielding options along with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Mohammad Siraj and Shardul Thakur. Yuzvendra Chahal, Prasid Krishna, Ravichandran Ashwin, Tilak Verma and Samson were not left out. Ashwin and Chahal were not in the Asia Cup anyway, Samson was the reserve and Krishna and Thilak were selected because the ACC allowed clubs to name the 17-man squads. So where’s the surprise?
This is when there are fewer reserved names. India have refrained from naming their stand-by or reserve players, a routine practice for international tournaments and ICC events, for the World Cup at home starting on October 5.

As the ICC does not allow more than 15 players in the main teams, most teams claim at least three reserve players. They usually decide when a replacement is selected if someone in the main squad is injured. But apparently India didn’t want to limit them to just three or four. With the World Cup being held at home, they have a chance to replace someone.
When asked about it, selector Agarkar pointed out that in case of injury to anyone from the senior team, the reserve will be made up of those who are Sri Lankans but have not played in the World Cup. That is Samson, Tilk and Krishna. “There are 17, KL is 18. So, if you want that cover, those three guys, be it a keeper, an extra seamer or a batsman. Thilak is also with us. This is the best 15 we have. Pick it, you won’t change it. , unless you have to because of injuries.”
Apparently, the ICC does not require teams to disclose the names of designated players. It’s a practice that teams have been following for the past few years to deal with injury issues. India chose Rishabh Pant, Ambati Rayudu and Navdeep Saini as their best players in the last World Cup.
India will be allowed to vote for the successor. That does not change the fact that they did not mention the reserved names. In fact, not naming the designated players would broaden India’s perspective. With three players named Agarkar, India have all the bases covered in the spin department. Along with Jadeja and Axar, Kuldeep Yadav is the tallest all-rounder. If Kuldeep gets injured in the middle of the tournament, players like Chahal and Ashwin will be in the lineup.
