A few nights ago, they beat Pakistan to win their second T20 World Cup title. Their dominance in limited-overs cricket has sparked debate as to whether they are the best white-ball team in the men’s game. Apart from their double World Cup victories in recent times, they have more arguments in their favour. Since the 2015 ODI World Cup debacle, England’s white-ball team has undergone a sea change. The immediate result was India’s appearance in the final of the 2016 T20 World Cup where they lost to eventual champions West Indies in a last over thriller.

In the last five ICC events in white-ball cricket, England have reached the final three times and won two. Through it all, they have consistently remained in the top three of both the ODI and T20I rankings and are largely responsible for revolutionizing white-ball cricket with their all-out attacking mentality.
Based on all these factors, former England captain Michael Vaughan said that the team led by Jos Buttler will be outright favorites to win the 2023 ODI tournament in India. The former batsman, who advised India to ‘swallow their pride and follow England’, also said it was ‘absolute nonsense’ to have hosts India as favorites for next year’s showpiece event.
“The next big ticket is to win the 50-over World Cup in India next year. They have good spin options and you have to go down as favorites for that tournament as well. When the tournament starts, people will have India as favorites at home . Clay. Total nonsense. England are none. No doubt the team to beat and will be for the next few years,” Vaughan wrote in the Daily Telegraph.
In particular, India won the last ODI World Cup on their soil in 2011. But since then they have not won a World Cup. Their last ICC trophy was almost a decade ago in 2013 when MS Dhoni led them to the Champions Trophy title.

“How are England going about their business? What are they doing? If I was in charge of Australia I would have asked Mike Hussey, who was an expert batting coach with England in this tournament, what they were doing behind the scenes. The Indian cricket team has been a powerhouse for nearly half a century, especially in the limited overs format. India’s dominance in the One Day International (ODI) World Cup has been reinforced, not once, but twice!
The EDI World Cup was held for the first time in 1975 and India has been a part of 13 editions so far. The cricket tournament is held every four years and is now played in the 50-over format.
India has won the ODI tournament twice. The first win came in 1983 when India defeated the West Indies in the final. It took nearly three decades for India to win a second ODI after defeating Sri Lanka in the 2011 final.

The 1975 ODI tournament in England, played in the 60-over format, was India’s first appearance at the global showpiece. The Indian cricket team led by Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan crashed out in the first round with two defeats and one victory.

India have been placed in Group B along with defending champions West Indies, Australia and Zimbabwe. The Indian cricket team won four matches and lost two to get past the first round of the ODI World Cup for the first time.
India beat hosts England by six wickets in the semi-final at Old Trafford, Manchester to book their place in the final against the West Indies.
Batting first in the 1983 World Cup final, India could only manage 183 runs, but a disciplined bowling effort bowled out West Indies for just 140 runs and gave India their first ODI World Cup trophy at the hallowed Lord’s in London.
Mahinder Amarnath was adjudged the man of the match in the final for taking three wickets and scoring 26 runs. India’s Roger Binny finished as the highest wicket taker of the edition with 18 wickets.

India were favorites to defend the title in 1987, which was jointly hosted by India and Pakistan. But the defending champions lost to England in the semi-finals at the Wankhede Stadium in Bombay (now Mumbai). It was also the first time that the ODI was played in the 50-over format.
India crashed out in the first round of the 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand with five losses, two wins and no results. The team reached the semi-finals in the 1996 edition but lost to eventual champions Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata (now Calcutta). India made it to Super Six in 1999.
In 2003, the Indian team reached the final of the ODI World Cup hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya for the second time, but again fell short against Australia at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
Sachin Tendulkar scored 673 runs in the 2003 World Cup, the highest run scored by a player in one edition of the tournament. He was also named the best player of the tournament.

After a disappointing tour in 2007, India won the title again in 2011, this time at home. The team lost only one match en route to the final against Sri Lanka.
After a masterclass by Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni, Sri Lanka scored 274/6 and India 277/4. While Gambhir scored 97, captain Dhoni remained unbeaten on 91 and hit the last six to get India over the line at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Sachin Tendulkar became the highest run scorer in ODI World Cup history with 482 runs. His score stands at 2,278 runs.

Despite being one of the favourites, India were knocked out of the semi-finals of the 2015 and 2019 ODIs. Rohit Sharma was the highest run scorer in 2019 with 648 runs.
In 2023, India dominated the tournament but eventually lost to Australia in the final. Until the final in Ahmedabad, the Indian cricket team was unbeaten and had won 10 consecutive matches. Virat Kohli (765), with a new record, and Rohit Sharma (597) were the leading run-scorers in Cricket World Cup 2023, while Mohammed Shami (24) was the leading wicket-taker. But their efforts failed in the finals. Team India’s peak in the cricketing world came in 1932 when India became the sixth country to receive Test cricket status.
Since then, after several changes in the Indian cricket landscape, the 1970s saw the rise of players like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Bishen Singh Bedi, who won the country’s first World Cup in 1983 against all odds.
Since then, the Indian cricket team won a T20 World Cup in 2007 and continued their revival four years later with another 50-over World Cup in 2011.
