India’s ICC World Cup 2023 squad was announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma at a press conference in Kandy on Tuesday, and Sri Lanka were in line as expected, but that didn’t come as a surprise. Feeling confused? Let’s make it clear. There were no surprises for the 15-man team, or in other words, the core team. KL Rahul, who is fit again, has been recalled to the team. Ishan Kishan was picked as the back-up bowler and keeper while Suryakumar Yadav beat Sanju Samson to the middle-order back-up position.
As for the seam bowling options, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Mohammad Siraj and Shardul Thakur have all picked themselves, as have all-rounders Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Yuzvendra Chahal, Prasham Krishna, Ravichandran Ashwin, Thilak Verma and Samson were left out. However, Ashwin and Chahal were not part of the Asia Cup, Samson was a reserve, and Krishna and Tilak were selected because the ACC allowed teams to name 17 members. So where’s the surprise?

They generally have priority in selecting a replacement when a member of the main team is injured. But it seems that India did not want to restrict them to just three or four names. With the World Cup being held at home, there is certainly a chance for them to replace a player.
When asked about this, Chief Selector Agarkar indicated that if anyone in the main squad gets injured, it is likely to be from those who are currently in Sri Lanka but have missed out on World Cup berths. That is Samson, Tilk and Krishna. “There are 17 and KL is 18th. So, if you want that cover, those three guys, whether it’s a keeper, an extra seamer or a batsman. Thilak is also with us. It’s the best 15. We have it and you’re not going to change it because of injuries,” He said.
Notably, the ICC does not make it mandatory for teams to name substitute players. Preparing for injuries is a practice that teams have commonly followed in recent years. India selected Rishabh Pant, Ambati Rayudu and Navdeep Saini as their official standby players in the last ODI World Cup.
