FEW COUNTRIES enjoy the sovereignty over a global sport that India has over cricket. India is home to the sport’s largest number of fans, controls most of its money and increasingly produces most of its best players. The full extent of this cricketing power was on display during the Men’s World Cup, the sport’s quadrennial event, hosted by India. In front of a loud crowd and under conditions optimized for their style of play, the Indian team trashed all opponents.

The men in blue’s perfect record – eight wins from eight games – is sure to be extended in their final group game against bottom-placed Netherlands on November 12th. India’s net run rate, a measure of a team’s dominance in matches, is almost double that of South Africa, currently the second highest of the 10 competing teams. But as the tournament heads into the knockout stages, the Rohit Sharma-led Indians will be aware that statistical superiority does not win a trophy.
New Zealand will advance to the semi-finals on November 15. Form suggests the New Zealanders pose little threat – India beat them soundly in the group stage. However, Indian fans are wary. At the 2019 and 2015 World Cups, her national team reached the semi-finals but were eliminated by New Zealand and Australia respectively. India have suffered similar woes in other international tournaments in the last decade.
After the last such defeat – in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup last year – Kapil Dev, the former captain, gave a simple reason for the continued poor performance: India “came close and then choked”.
Fans and pundits around the world cite choking as an explanation for failure – and not just in cricket. Manchester City won the English Premier League title last season after Arsenal spent 248 days in first place. Arsenal, football fans gleefully claimed, “bottled it”.
A Last Hurrah Before Transition In Indian Cricket?
It’s easier for fans to attribute poor results to a team’s mental shortcomings than to the skill of the opponent or the vagaries of the sport. The reality is less comfortable. Choking in the true sense is rare among elite athletes. According to Christopher Messagno and Denise Hill, two sports psychologists, choking occurs when an “acute and significant decline in skill execution and performance” is caused by “increased anxiety under perceived pressure.”
By this standard, most huge requests break down. In the recent T20 World Cup, India put up a good fight but were defeated by a strong England team with some superb batting. An analysis of India matches by ESPNCricinfo, a cricket website, suggests that the team’s performance in high-pressure matches has not let up.
In most cases, failure has a more mundane explanation: a better opponent. Arsenal’s failure to win the Premier League is not due to the absence of the mythical bottle. They were overtaken by a Manchester City side who had won 11 league games in a row.
Of course, there is a risk of suffocation. The South African cricket team provides a compelling example. In the 1999 World Cup semi-final, the Proteas were just one run away from victory when madness ensued. Lance Klusener and Alan Donald failed to simply run – both players ended up at the same end of the field – to give Australia a place in the final. To describe this episode as an “acute and significant decline in performance” would be putting it mildly.

And the “choker” label stuck. South Africa’s exits from tournaments are always scrutinized for signs of mental fragility. The C-word will no doubt be thrown around liberally before (and possibly after) South Africa take on Australia in the other semi-final on November 16.
While it’s hard to shake off the “strong” label, it’s getting easier to help athletes perform under pressure. New research has revealed more about how stress affects athletes’ short-term memory, causing them to overthink and struggle with basic tasks. More is known about the possible solutions. These include pre-competition routines (like deep breathing) and dual-task drills (where participants practice one athletic skill while performing another task, making the former second nature).
Most importantly, there is interest in such interventions. The England men’s football team have specialists to help them overcome whistles during penalty shootouts. Iga Sviatek, the best tennis player in the world, travels with a full-time psychologist. Such examples are becoming more common.
But despite all the good work, sports psychologists cannot reduce the quality of the opponent. They also cannot explain happiness. India may still stumble in the semi-finals or even the final. The slogan of the current World Cup is “It Takes a Day”. The bromine implies that triumph is always within reach, but in elite sport, so is failure. Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, has been criticized as a bad example after she smashed the stumps and verbally took a dig at the umpires in a match against Bangladesh.
According to media reports, Kaur could be fined 75 per cent of her match fee and also faces a two-match ban for her conduct in the One Day International (ODI), which ended in a rare draw on Saturday.
After umpire Tanveer Ahmed said she had been caught slipping during the match, Kaur smashed the stumps with her bat and appeared to reprimand him before gesturing to the crowd, ESPNcricinfo reported.
She was then heard telling her colleague Nigar Sultana to invite the umpires on stage after the post-match presentation, forcing the Bangladesh players to abandon a group photo session.

“I have been watching cricket for a long time but I have never seen anyone behave like Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur after a match,” former women’s captain Diana Edulji wrote in her column for The Indian Express on Tuesday.
“She set a bad example for her teammates. I say this because the juniors look up to the seniors and that can affect the team culture over time,” Edulji said.
“It was unfortunate to see Harmanpreet calling the umpires to pose with the Bangladesh team, implying that they are part of the team and playing for them.”

“It’s not bigger than the game. There is a very bad reputation for Indian cricket. BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) should take very strict disciplinary action.”
According to ESPNcricinfo, Kaur is at risk of becoming the first woman cricketer to be found guilty of breaching the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Level 2 code of conduct, which deals with the conduct of players.
“The BCCI and also the ICC should take action against them,” he said. “I think he should be suspended for a few matches.” BCCI was established on 1 December 1928 in Madras (now Chennai) under Madras Act XXI of 1860 and subsequently re-registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975 .
It is a consortium of state cricket associations who elect their own representatives who elect the BCCI president. It joined the Royal Cricket Conference in 1926, which later became the International Cricket Council.
