India and Pakistan were considered favorites to defend the title in 1987. But the defending champions were defeated by England in the final at the Wankhede Stadium, Bombay (now Mumbai). It is also the first time that the ODI World Cup is being played in the 50 over format.
In the 1992 World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand, India lost the first series with five losses, two wins but no results. The team reached the semi-finals in the 1996 edition but lost in the final to Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in Calcutta (now Kolkata). India reached the Super Sixes stage in 1999.
In 2003, Team India reached the finals for the second time in the ODI World Cup hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya, but again failed to meet Australia at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

Sachin Tendulkar scored 673 runs in the 2003 World Cup, which remains the highest run scored by a player in a single edition of the tournament. He was also named the best player of the tournament.

The Sri Lankan side reached 274/6 and India 277/4 after a master class from Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni. While Gambhir scored 97, skipper Dhoni remained unbeaten on 91 and hit the last six to get past India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
