South Africa’s hopes of qualifying directly for the ODI World Cup later this year suffered a setback after they maintained a slow pace during their defeat to England in the third ODI in the Kimberley, dropping one point from the Premier League table balance. Wednesday. Referee Geoff Crowe awarded the penalty, realizing that Temba Bamboma’s side were one place off the target when time was taken into account. South Africa was also fined 20% of the match fee for this violation. South Africa sit ninth in Premier League ODIs with 78 points, 79 points before the penalty kick. The top eight teams will automatically qualify for the 2023 World Cup, while the bottom five teams in the Premier League will have to play in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup qualifiers, along with five supporting teams. Two teams from these qualifiers will then advance to the World Cup, completing the squad of ten competitors. Seven of the top eight places in the Premier League have already been taken by New Zealand, India, England, Pakistan, Australia, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The only place still open is the West Indies, currently on 88 points; South Africa (78), Sri Lanka (77) and Ireland (68) are also on this list.
2023 FIFA World Cup Qualification Scenarios South Africa Played: 19, Points: 78, NRR: -0.410, Matches Remaining: 2 – Net (H) Two wins for South Africa will take them to 98 points (without any additional penalties). Sri Lanka can overcome this if they win all three ODIs in New Zealand, which is quite a tall order considering New Zealand’s 17-4 record in home ODIs in the last four years. While South Africa’s points position is good, Ireland can reach the same level of points with 98 points if they win all three matches against Bangladesh. In such a case, Net Run Rate will come into play (NRR is the second tiebreaker after wins, but both teams will have the same number of wins in such a scenario). If the South Africa-Netherlands series ends 1-1, South Africa will finish level on points with the West Indies, while Sri Lanka can edge them with two wins (or one win and two draws). Sri Lanka Played: 21, Points: 77, NRR: -0.094, Matches Remaining: 3 – NZ (a) Sri Lanka will definitely qualify for the tournament if they beat New Zealand 3-0 (or win 2-0 away). . However, if they lose a match, they will rely on other results to save them: both South Africa and Ireland could overtake them if they finish on 97. Ireland Played: 21, Points: 68, NRR-0.382, Matches Remaining: 3 – Bann (in England) They have two three-match ODI series against Bangladesh in their calendar. A match in March does not count in the Premier League and a match in May does not. A 3-0 series win would take Ireland to 98 points; If Sri Lanka fail to win all three matches in New Zealand and Ireland finish ahead of South Africa (on points or NRR) that will be enough. West Indies Played: 24, Points: 88, NRR-0.738, Matches Remaining: 0 West Indies have completed their eight bilateral series in the Premier League and can hope that none of the other teams in contention can surpass 88 points. Once the first man wins the tiebreaker, the West Indies will finish ahead of South Africa, Sri Lanka and Ireland if they finish level on points. For the West Indies to be successful, South Africa must lose at least once to the Netherlands, Ireland must win at most twice and Sri Lanka must win at most one match in the remaining series. 3 February 1800 GMT – This
