Rohit achieved his feat in the eighth over when he sent a length ball over the square fence from Naveen-ul-Haq for a giant six off 85 metres. Gayle hit a total of 553 sixes in 551 innings (three formats combined), while Rohit overtook the ‘Universe Boss’ with 472 innings. Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi is third on the list with 438 sixes from 508 innings.

Rohit was two sixes short of Gayle at the start of the over and in the fifth over, Fazalhaq took the first strike against Farooqui’s bowling. Six also scored 1000 runs in the World Cup as an Indian captain. He needed 19 innings, the same as Australian opener David Warner. At the same time, he overtook India’s reigning champion Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly.

Rohit then equalized Gayle’s tally in the seventh over against the same bowler. Farooqui tried to beat the Indian skipper with a slow short shot as he came to mid-on and leg, but a lack of pace gave Rohit enough time to drive him over deep square-back towards backward point.
