Former India opener Wasim Jaffer made a bold statement about Rohit Sharma following India’s exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Cannot Get Him Out Like That

Rohit Sharma-led Team India suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Jos Buttler’s England in the second semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup on Thursday. Despite getting past South Africa, Bangladesh and arch-rivals Pakistan, Group 2 leaders India failed to get into the T20 World Cup top spot by beating England’s Rohit and Co by 10 wickets.

Reflecting on Team India’s performance under veteran opener Rohit in the T20 World Cup, former India opener Wasim Jaffer made a bold statement about the Asian giants’ all-format captain. The former India opener and full-time cricket pundit feels that white-ball wizard Rohit will not feature in the next T20 World Cup. The upcoming edition of the T20 World Cup will be held between West Indies and USA in June 2024.

“Well, I guess the name for me is Rohit Sharma. I don’t see him playing in the next World Cup, the T20 World Cup. Having so many names in the pool sometimes gets you confused and that’s exactly what happened in India. Crictracker said for Jaffer, “the tournament’s team,” he said.

Jaffer’s comments come at a time when batting great Sunil Gavaskar has claimed that there are many players in the Indian team who will reconsider retirement after the T20 World Cup. Rohit, who will replace batting icon Virat Kohli as India’s T20I captain in 2021, failed to participate in the 2022 edition of the ICC tournament for the 2007 champions.

Former skipper Kohli emerged as the top run-scorer in the T20 World Cup, while skipper Rohit scored 116 runs in six innings. The 35-year-old scored a half-century at the T20 World Cup in Australia and averaged 19.33.

But he made up for it with a superb fielding effort to dismiss Jason Roy.

It all happened on the third ball of England’s 17th over, when Roy hit the ball towards short mid-wicket and took a single. But then a terrible mix-up occurred between Roy and batting partner Jonny Bairstow when the duo appeared in the middle of the field.

Rohit, meanwhile, swung the ball to his right for a block and soon lobbed it to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who promptly sent the England opener back to the pavilion.

Even though you’ve been playing as teammates for decades, running between goals, even at the highest level of the game, can lead to terrible mix-ups. But on Sunday, Rohit Sharma realized that Pujara was playing a historic Test and hence gave up his own wicket after a misunderstanding.

Chasing 115 runs, Rohit Sharma gave India an aggressive start in the second Test against Australia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The Indian skipper scored 31 off just 20 balls, including three fours and two sixes, even after losing partner KL Rahul early. However, the manner in which he was dismissed caught everyone’s attention.

In the seventh over of the innings, Rohit bowled a delivery which was tipped into the air by Matthew Kuhneman in front of the side square. Cheteshwar Pujara, playing his 100th Test, decided to take two runs and although the skipper initially fought back, he eventually stopped and walked back. However, Pujara had already passed Sharma and crossed the middle of the field by then, so he was not aware of the current situation.

Rohit showed the maturity to immediately admit that the mistake was his and given that this was a special Test match for Pujara, the 35-year-old decided to walk out in disappointment. The scene with two of India’s most senior batsmen at the crease looked ugly but Rohit’s decision to sacrifice his wicket was applauded by many.
