Rohit Sharma became the third batsman in men’s international T20 competition to reach 3000 runs in the T20 World Cup clash against Namibia on Monday. Rohit scored 56 runs in the final match of India’s T20 WC campaign to set the stage for a massive 9-wicket win. The stunning opener joined Virat Kohli and Martin Guptill in the elusive list. Guptill also made it to the T20 World Cup.

India’s T20I captain is also expected to take charge of the opening game as it was Kohli’s last game as India’s captain in the shorter format.

Kohli himself dropped a massive hint that Rohit will take over the captaincy from him in the T20Is.

“It was an honor for me, I was given an opportunity and I tried to do everything in my power. But it’s also time to make room and move on. I was extremely proud of the way the team played. Now I think it’s time for the next batch to move this team forward. Rohit has obviously been here and seen things for a while,” Kohli had said during the toss.

India scored 54 runs in the Power-play, 39 of which came from Sharma’s bat. He was lucky as Michael van Lingen pulled one hand to fine leg and rolled to the boundary rope for four.

Rohit shared a landmark 86-run stand with KL Rahul for the opening wicket to set up India’s chase, which they comfortably completed in 15.2 overs. Rahul also hit an unbeaten 54 off 36 balls for his third fifty of the campaign.

It was also the last game of head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar in the training regime.

Rohit’s fiery 46 not only helped India level the series against Australia in Nagpur, but also eased tension over his form in the run-up to next month’s big event Down Under.

Heading into the final six T20Is, finding a capable spin partner in Yuzvnder Chahal was at the top of India’s wish list. And the question was not easy – Ravindra Jadeja is three players rolled into one. Some might even argue that he is also the ultimate T20 cricketer. How are you going to replace it – where do you start?

To Aksar Patel’s credit, he stuck to the basics, doing what he does best. His main strength is his left-arm spin and in that aspect he even has an edge over Jadeja according to T20 statistics. Forget what he didn’t do with the bat in Mohali or the fact that he fell in irritation caught off Cameron Green, Patel’s main task was to cement his place as the number two spinner.

In the words of Aaron Finch, Patel made the distinction in Nagpur, which was no easy feat. He bowled a power play and then another to complete his two-over haul, taking three wickets. Six wickets in two games despite intense scrutiny in the World Cup and as far as Indian bowling is concerned, he has ticked all the boxes from Mohali to Nagpur. On October 23, when India host Pakistan in their World Cup opener, Patel will be included in the starting eleven.

Looking ahead to the second T20I in Nagpur only, there is one more thing that India need not worry about. It is about the form of the main batsman – the first name on the team sheet, his captain Rohit Sharma. Chasing 91 off 48 balls in this reduced game, the skipper put on a huge show for his ‘home’ fans. He was born in Nagpur, you see, and the hopeful Indian fanatic is hoping that he has finally started his World Cup campaign on his own.

Four sixes — over midwicket, pulled over square leg and again off a slower delivery over long-on — were Rohit’s modular displays of timing and six-hitting prowess. He is probably the easiest six hitter in world cricket and has been for a long time. He has so much time to pick his spot and this facet alone makes him one of the most destructive batsmen in the shorter format. What a fantastic treat it was for the Nagpur crowd to watch him bat in full flow after a long wait due to the wet pitch and damp places!

At this point I want to ask – what was the big concern? Well, it wasn’t individually but for the Indian chart as a whole. Rohit, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli tend to bat the same at times and this basic T20 batting error has cost India dearly in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Ever since the new management was put in place under Rohit and coach Rahul Dravid, there has been a concerted effort to improve the strike rate throughout the batting order.

Worked? Try this. Before starting this T20I series against Australia, Rahul scored 136.24 SR in 12 matches. This is a lower strike rate than his career average of 140.91. He surpassed this mark four times – against Afghanistan (143.75), Scotland (263.15) and Namibia (150) in this 2021 World Cup and against Afghanistan (151.21) in the recent Asia Cup. All the four matches were inconsequential for the Indian team. The fifth time and the game that mattered came in Mohali when he scored a half-century at SR 157.14. Not his fault but India still lost.

Kohli struggled for a walk in the interval. Prior to this same series in Australia, his strike rate (133.64) from 12 T20 matches last year is well below his career strike rate of 138.37. He played only one note at a higher strike rate, that century against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup. Is he really fit again? In two games against Australia, Kohli has scored 13 runs at SR 100. Make of that what you will.

Rahul can be unstoppable when he’s in the mood, but how often does he embrace the mood? Kohli does what he does and not many can question that at this point. It inevitably highlights Rohit Sharma, and it doesn’t help that his T20 form has been spotty of late. Consider, for example, his IPL 2022 form of 268 runs in 14 games at 120.18 SR. It was his lowest ever return in a single IPL season and only the second time in his IPL career that Rohit failed to cross the 300-run mark in the league stage.

Translating that form to the international arena, where he now has the added responsibility of captaincy. In the same span as Rahul and Kohli mentioned above, Rohit has scored relatively higher (150) in 27 matches than his career SR average of 141.26. We need to dig deeper here.

In those 27 games, his average is almost the same as his career T20I average of 32.52 to 32.53. Perhaps the output pales in comparison to his career 50-plus runs every four innings. In the last year or so, Rohit has crossed 50 sixes in 27 innings — a half-century every 4.5 innings. Again, not a huge discrepancy.

The biggest detail is how he bats through the innings. In 15 of his 27 innings during this period, Rohit has scored at a strike rate above his career average. In fact, the more he hits, the faster he scores, as is the case with his shots.

He has crossed the 30-run mark on three of those four occasions, marking quick starts for the Indian team. In conclusion, the captain wholeheartedly chose a quicker way of scoring. There is simply an element of increased risk in this approach.

Over the long term, form and stats usually take care of themselves. Rohit and the whole of India will certainly be hoping that is the case for three weeks in Australia.
