Friday’s historic journey to the 100th international century took longer than expected, coming from a landmark that had not been seen for more than a year.

But the “Little Master” scored a much-anticipated cricket feat in the Asia Cup at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

“When I got the 99th century, nobody talked about it,” he said. “I think the media started it. Everywhere I went people were talking about my hundreds.”

Sachin scored his 49th ODI century in the first match against Bangladesh at Shakib Al Hasan’s square. Despite the mounting pressure of expectations from millions of his Indian countrymen, he does not celebrate much.

Sachin Tendulkar told Neo Cricket Channel after the match, “I can’t think about anything at the moment, it’s a difficult process for me. “I made a good start but it was pointless. It doesn’t matter how many hundreds you get, you still have to grind.”

The greatest batsman of this era scored his last century (111) against South Africa in Nagpur during the World Cup on March 12 last year.

The World Cup in Mumbai and the tours of England and Australia all gave him a chance to hit the mark in some of the more popular venues, but Tendulkar has been around from time to time.

He lost twice in Tests in the 90s last year – 91 against England at the Oval and 94 against the West Indies at Wankhede – and was dismissed for 85 against Pakistan during the World Cup in Mohali.

Tendulkar shares a lifetime record of 68 international centuries with his close partner Ricky Ponting and reached the prime of his career at the age of 37.

Ever since his international debut against Pakistan in 1989 for 16, Tendulkar has been compared not only to the great batsmen of his time like Brian Lara and Inzamam-ul-Haq, but also to the great Australian Donald Bradman.

Bradman, who retired in 1948 with an average of 99.94, said Tendulkar reminded him of his own style of play.

“Not even Don Bradman lived up to such expectations, and Sachin has been carrying it since 1989,” wrote former India coach and Australian captain Greg Chappell in his recent autobiography.

Sachin already holds several major batting records, including the most runs and centuries in five-day Tests and one-day internationals.
