I guess it depends on what you want to achieve. Generally, tournaments pay around 25% of the field. If you want bigger payouts that get better players, pay 10% of the field. Pay 33% of the field if you want a fun tournament where some weak players steal the money every time. As far as the payment is concerned, that payment calculator looks interesting.

It’s just like the tournaments I help run. What we do is pay exactly in the region of 25%. 8 players, only 2 get paid. 32 players, 8 get paid.
32 players, 1-8 are paid. Get their entry back on 7/8. 5/6 gets $15, then the rest of the pot is split up ~45%, ~30%, ~20% and ~10%.
This forms a very repetitive guideline. The only people I know who don’t like this payment guideline are greedy people. They want more when they win, or pay for extra places when they lose money. Either way, this is for a low-budget event.

I pay 3 places to 32 players and get 60% 1st, 30% 2nd and 10% 3rd. If the third is less than the entry fee, round it up to the entry fee. How are all the tournaments in my area? Friday tournaments regularly bring in 40-50 players every Friday and they only pay for 3 spots.
Pay-out app doesn’t seem to have a ratio setting but it’s working about that ratio. It also seems that the app’s rounding algorithm is broken if the sums are not correctly obtained. You can always give/take a few extra rupees for the first two positions to make the total correct.
There is a tournament once a month where 50% is paid for first place, 25% for second place and 12.5% for third/fourth place, no more. There will always be a lot of players for that monthly, but I think equal payouts will get more regular players.
