Compared to Virat Kohli, David Warner faced more pressure and had less support in IPL 2016, which placed him at the top in Smart Runs·BCCI
Virat Kohli scored a record 973 runs in IPL 2016, the highest in a season. Dwayne Bravo scored 32 goals in 2013, the most ever in a season. The absolute values of these runs and wickets are huge, but what about their actual value and impact on these matches? Did the other player score fewer runs or take fewer wickets, but did so in high-pressure, demanding situations? Enter Smart Stats, a set of metrics developed by the company that takes into account the context of every shot and bowling. The context is quantified by calculating the pressure on the batsman and the bowler for each ball, taking into account the runs required, the overs remaining, the quality of the batsmen in the field and following, the quality of the bowlers and the number of overs remaining for each; plus the pitch/conditions and how easy or difficult it is to score points. Based on these factors, every run scored or lost and every wicket taken is given a Smart Runs or Smart Wickets value. In addition, each batting and bowling performance is given a strike value which depends on the pressure under which he performed. So, for each IPL season, there is a Smart Runs and Smart Wickets leaderboard as well as the best player of the tournament based on points scored in the match. Here’s a seasonal comparison of smart numbers and actual numbers in IPL history. Orange Cap In the 12 seasons so far, only twice was the leader in terms of Smart Runs not also the best scorer of the tournament. In 2013, Michael Hussey won the Orange title with 733 runs, but according to Smart Stats, Chris Gayle’s 708 runs were worth 773.46 Smart Runs while Hussey’s Smart Runs were valued at 726.94.
Virat Kohli 973 Ipl 2016
The bigger surprise would be the smart numbers from the 2016 season. Kohli’s total of 973 runs was 125 more than David Warner’s 848, but when it comes to Smart Runs, Warner’s total was 935.52 runs against Kohli’s 925.24 runs. Kohli’s strike rate of 152.03 was similar to Warner’s strike rate of 151.42, but that doesn’t tell the real story. In the matches in which Kohli participated, the average strike rate was 9.22 runs per innings, while in the matches in which Warner participated, it was only 8.05. In Bengaluru, Kohli’s home ground, the average strike rate was 149.34, while in Hyderabad, Warner’s home ground, the average strike rate was 121.19. Kohli also has much better support, with AB de Villiers and KL Rahul also scoring well: RCB’s remaining batsmen have scored 153.91 for the season, while Sunrisers’ other batsmen have scored just 120.04. In a relatively thin line-up, Warner was clearly the star, and as he consistently struck under greater pressure, the difference between his clever and conventional passing was much greater. Purple Cap There have been five seasons in which the bowler with the most conventional wicket in the tournament was not the bowler with the smartest wickets. This first happened in the 2013 season when Bravo earned the purple cap with 32 goals. However, in terms of Smart Wicket, Mitchell Johnson came in first: his 24 wickets were worth 27.2 Smart Wickets, while Bravo’s Smart Wicket was just 24.8.
This difference is due to the quality of goals scored by Johnson. Of his 24 wickets, 16 came from the three best batsmen in the opposition lineup; on 17 occasions batsmen were dismissed before reaching 15 points and six times they failed to score. The batsmen dismissed for ducks were Thilakaratne Dilshan, Aaron Finch and Suresh Raina. On the other hand, 20 of Bravo’s 32 wickets were fatal when batsmen go for quick runs and scoring is easier for the bowler. Some of these wickets are undoubtedly crucial, which is taken into account in the Smart Wickets calculation because it takes into account the context of the match, but very often they do not matter as much as the dismissal of a top-order batsman due to a low score. Only once in the last five years was the leader in the Smart Wickets category also the best player of the tournament. In the last two seasons, the Purple Cap holder has not been at the top of the Smart Wickets chart: in 2018, Rashid Khan (21 goals, 26.3 Smart Wickets) overtook Andrew Tye (24 goals, 26.1 Smart Wickets) and Deepak Chahar last year he overtook Imran Tahir. Player of the Season Each Season As with the bowler list, there are five instances where the Smart Stats player of the tournament did not match the official winner. The first one took place during the second edition of the IPL in 2009, when Adam Gilchrist was the player of the tournament; according to Smart Numbers, Matthew Hayden had the highest impact rate of 69.35 (among players who played at least 10 games in the season). He was also the tournament’s top scorer with 572 runs, 77 more than Gilchrist’s 495. However, smart values only take into account batting and bowling performances; in 2009, Gilchrist, apart from being a goalkeeper, also led Deccan Chargers to the title. These are contributions that cannot be measured by smart statistics.
The following season, Sachin Tendulkar was the official player of the tournament, scoring a tournament-high 618 runs at a strike rate of 132.6, but according to Smart Stats, his biggest influence was his Mumbai Indians teammate Kieron Pollard. Pollard scored 273 runs (339 smart runs worth) at a brilliant strike rate of 185.7 and also took 15 wickets at a healthy economy rate of 7.40. In fact, this is one of only eight instances in IPL history where a player has scored over 250 runs and taken 15 or more wickets in an IPL season. The last such instance was in 2016 when Kohli lost to Chris Morris. Morris’ 195 runs, scored at a rate of 178.9, were worth Smart’s 239 runs. According to Smart Stats, his most memorable match of the season was against Gujarat Lions. He dismissed Brendon McCullum and Suresh Raina and then, scoring 57 for 4 in the 11th over, chasing 173, almost took the Daredevils home with an incredible unbeaten 82 off 32 balls. They lost by just one run. More on smart statistics from IPL history tomorrow in part two of the analysis.
