He knelt down, took off his helmet and as he received a standing ovation from the Mumbai crowd after his 50th ODI century, the Indian star looked and kissed his wife, actress Anushka Sharma.

He bowed to cricket hero Sachin Tendulkar who broke his record at the Wankhede Stadium.

Virat Kohli Records, Awards And Achievements

He is soon greeted by football legend David Beckham, who couldn’t have timed his first visit to India better.

Kohli continued his dominance in the tournament by hitting a landmark century in the Cricket World Cup semi-final against New Zealand on Wednesday.

There were unbeaten knocks of 103 against Bangladesh and 101 against South Africa, but it was this 117 that stood out the most and broke a record many believed would stand here.

The 50-year-old Tendulkar, the leading run-scorer in both ODI and Test cricket, has amassed 49 ODI centuries in 452 innings. Kohli, remarkably, reached the milestone in 279 innings and 291st ODI.

Tendulkar was his childhood cricket idol. After India won their second World Cup in 2011, Tendulkar carried Kohli on his shoulders around the Wankhede.

“My wife, the person I love the most, is sitting,” he said. “My hero, he’s sitting there. I managed to take the 50th place in front of everyone in this historical place.”

The 35-year-old Kohli, nicknamed ‘The King’ in India and the most popular cricketer in the world, is now ending his 15-year career in ODIs.

He scored his maiden hundred – 107 off 114 balls – against Sri Lanka in Kolkata in December 2009 and achieved stardom with 133 off 86 balls against Sri Lanka in Hobart in the tri-series with Australia.

He scored 183 against Pakistan in 2012 and scored the fastest ODI hundred by an Indian batsman with 52 against Australia in Jaipur in October 2013.

While Kohli has scored three hundreds in the current tournament, he has only scored two hundreds in three World Cups so far.
