Virat Kohli Total Runs In T20 World Cup 2022
As the former India captain turned 81, he bowled at least five singles and his batting partner Rahul later explained why.
“He (Kohli) was confused and said, ‘It won’t look good not to play singles, it’s still the World Cup and it’s still a big stage.’ I don’t want to look like I’m just trying to reach a milestone,” Rahul told the tournament broadcaster.
“But I said it’s no-win, but I still think we’ll win pretty easily, so if you can get to that stage, why not, you should go for it. And he did it in the end. I wasn’t going to compete in singles anyway.
One of the biggest stumbling blocks came when India were twice short of the target of 257 with Kohli on 97 when Ahmed hit a ball that went past Kohli’s leg but umpire Richard Kettleborough missed the signal.

“The on-field umpire cools his leg and then smiles,” cricket writer Peter Della Penna wrote in his post.
“If Kohli wants to give up singles in pursuit of a century, so be it, but there are fairness issues when the umpire refuses to take an obvious leg shot to aid Kohli’s personal escape.”
If Kohli gave up singles with 7 wickets in hand and 10 overs left to get a century, I would have done 5 leg kicks if I was a Bangladeshi player. No more ‘I play for the team’ nonsense from any cricketer big or small. — Peter Della Penna (@PeterDellaPenna) March 2023 October 19
One sarcastic comment called the run between Kohli’s century and India’s target “the first turnover game of this World Cup”.

Others said Kohli had every right to pace his innings the way he wanted because “India will never lose”.
I totally disagree with that. 1. India never set out to lose. 2. It is very unlikely that they will need NRR to stand out from the other teams in the table. 3. Vek made his fans happy. 4. Round numbers are cool and everyone praises them. What’s the problem? #CWC23 https://t.co/GBuVbsxc3P — Dan Liebke (@LiebCricket) March 2023 October 20
But former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram praised Kohli for switching gears with ease as he achieved his first ton in this World Cup and his third in all World Cup matches.
“They [Kohli and Rahul] were enjoying the bat, bowling at a healthy pace,” Akram said on the post-match TV show when asked about the criticism of Kohli.

“He [Kohli] scored quick doubles in his 80s and 90s despite bowling 50 balls, which is unbelievable,” Akram said.
The 34-year-old’s last century in Championship cricket came against Pakistan in 2015, but former India opener Mohammad Kaif said Kohli is an expert in the art of the ‘run ODI’.
When Virat Kohli wants to score 100, he gets it. So what if India only needed 169 to win when he was batting. Few people understand the art of running in ODIs like he does. @imVkohli #ViratKohli pic.twitter.com/L0X5lgITPy — Mohammad Kaif (@MohammadKaif) December 2023 October 20
