India’s superstar batsman Virat Kohli once again showed his immense prowess by smashing his 48th ODI century in the 2023 World Cup against Bangladesh. As India look set for a fourth consecutive victory in the tournament, one can sense Kohli’s mindset changing as he sets his sights on the magical three-figure mark. After all, Kohli ran his innings almost completely, as he has done throughout his career, since he came to the crease in the 13th over of the game.

With India needing just 19 runs to win and Kohli needing the exact same number to reach his century, the iconic batsman began his quest for a hundred. In the last two overs of the match, Kohli repeatedly denied singles, with non-striker KL Rahul both helping the 34-year-old’s chase. Kohli’s approach has become more aggressive, focusing on finding boundaries and relying less on running between the wickets to reach his milestone.

However, no Kohli innings is truly complete without his immaculate ability to convert them into twos. In the penultimate over, Kohli thrilled the crowd with two quick twos, a testament to his incredible fitness and determination. Kohli’s unrelenting, century-long run ended in the most dramatic fashion. With just two runs needed for victory and three for his team, Kohli scored a sensational six against Nasum Ahmed, not only securing India a resounding victory but also reaching the magnificent three-figure score in Pune.
The crowd naturally erupted with joy as Kohli once again showed why he is considered one of the greatest ODI batsmen of all time. With his 48th century, Kohli moved even closer to Sachin Tendulkar, who holds the record for most centuries in ODIs (49). In all, Kohli smashed his 78th international ton; Tendulkar remains firmly on top in that regard, with 100 centuries to his name. But this is not the only milestone for the Indian star. Kohli also surpassed Mahela Jayawardene to become the fourth all-time leading scorer in international cricket with his innings against Bangladesh. He is now only behind Sachin Tendulkar (34,357 runs), Kumar Sangakkara (28,016 runs) and Ricky Ponting (27,483 runs) in this elite list.

However, it wasn’t the most important milestone of the night. Although the coveted 50th ODI century is still two centuries away, Kohli, during his innings, achieved another remarkable feat by surpassing another record by Tendulkar. He became the fastest to reach 26,000 runs in international cricket. With an impressive total of 26,026 runs in international cricket and still unbeaten, Kohli achieved this milestone in his 567th international innings, 34 innings less than the legendary Tendulkar’s 601 innings.
The night was not over for Kohli. Another remarkable achievement awaited Kohli, and he scaled it in style, surpassing Brian Lara and Rohit Sharma to take the fourth position among the leading scorers in the history of ODI World Cups. In this feat, Kohli is only behind Tendulkar (2278 runs), Ponting (1743 runs) and Sangakkara (1531 runs) in ODI World Cups.
