Virat Kohli And Rohit Sharma: How The Captain And The King Aligned To Conquer The World

Rohit Sharma made an impressive return after a two-month injury layoff on Sunday as he reached 60 to help India crush the West Indies by six wickets in the ODI series opener in Ahmedabad. With his signature shots and elegant stroke play, the 34-year-old first-rounder heralded his arrival as if he had never left. The win was special, as it was India’s 1,000th match in the ODI format and Rohit’s first outing as full-time captain in the 50-over format.

Chasing a modest total of 176 runs on a slow pitch, India finished with a record of 178-4 in just 28 overs with Suryakumar Yadav (34 not out) and debutant Deepak Hooda (26 not out) adding the final touch. The comprehensive victory marked the beginning of a new chapter for India as Rohit took charge of the white-ball team at a time when the team is trying for the next two World Cups.

Rohit is usually a brilliant goalkeeper who gives his players the freedom to decide what they want to do. His stint with Mumbai Indians (MI) is a testimony to his captaincy skills. He has led the team to a record five IPL trophies and is the most successful captain in the history of the tournament.

Former India all-rounder Pragyan Ojha also praised Rohit’s leadership qualities and noted how his affable nature makes it easy for young players to find solace. He also spoke about Virat Kohli’s poise and ferocious nature, which could intimidate an introverted debutant in the team.

“Kohli is so energetic and expressive that a player who does not have a similar character finds it difficult to express himself… he has no idea how to express his thoughts to the skipper in intense situations. But Rohit is not too expressive. . He knows that in such an intense game you will find introverted players. This is a big difference in the character or approach of Kohli & Rohit,” Ojha told Cricbuzz.

“In general, his intensity in winning the match is the same, but many players say they feel comfortable with Rohit. Every new player needs time to open up… and Rohit makes it easy despite not being expressive on the pitch . A shy player understands about. a little intimidated by Virat’s facial attitude. But the bigger aim of both Virat and Rohit is to take Indian cricket forward,” he added.

Rohit will look to clinch the series when India and West Indies meet in the second ODI, which will be played at the same venue on Wednesday. All the ODI matches will be played in a secure bubble at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, followed by three T20Is in Kolkata with similar restrictions.

Captaincy Showdown: Virat Kohli Vs Rohit Sharma: Who Is The Better Leader?

3rd T20I  •  St George’s West Indies England Today 5.30pm Match starts in 4 hours 9 minutes Video Series Schedule

Two of the biggest names in Indian cricket, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, will clash in the opening match of IPL 2021. How do they compare against each other in terms of batting and captaincy in the IPL? Here’s the bottom line.

Captain Sharma’s record is part of a record six winning campaigns (with Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians), including five as captain of Mumbai Indians. Under Sharma, Mumbai Indians have been the most successful franchise in the league, winning 68 out of 116 matches. However, Sharma’s performance with the captain’s bat is not great. He has an average of 30.25 as captain, compared to 32.91 without the captain’s card. Kohli is one of four IPL captains with more than 100 appearances; he is the only one on this list not to have won the title.

Kohli’s overall win-loss record as an IPL captain is also not great. The Royal Challengers won only 55 of 125 matches under his leadership. However, as a batsman, there are not many who can match Kohli’s consistency and impact. He is the leading run bowler in the competition and also holds the record for most runs as captain. Kohli’s average as captain of 43.88 is behind only David Warner (49.01) among those with more than 1000 runs as captain, and well above his IPL average before he began leading the Royal Challengers (26 ,96).

Virat Kohli Vs Rohit Sharma: How Many Matches Have India Won Under Their Leadership?

Impact on the team with the bat Mumbai Indians rely much less on Sharma the batsman compared to Kohli’s Royal Challengers. While Sharma has moved up the batting order, Kohli is a top-notch specialist. He batted outside the openers only three and four times for the Royal Challengers, contributing 22.93% of the team’s overall runs. On the other hand, more than 40% of Sharma’s career as captain has been spent batting outside the top three. For the last two seasons he has held the top spot, but has not reached high levels of consistency or volume of runs. However, when he gets significant scores, Mumbai Indians’ chances of victory are higher: only seven of his 22 fifties as captain have ended in defeat, and he has been man of the match on 12 of the 15 occasions he has scored fifty victories. . .Kohli also made key contributions to the Royal Challengers’ victories, scoring a quarter of the team’s total in those matches. Kohli’s batting average as captain in victories stands at 64.02, with four centuries and 15 fifties in 55 victories.

How they build their innings The playing styles of Sharma and Kohli are quite similar, if you look at their scoring percentages in different phases of an IPL innings. Both score at a strike rate of just over 110 in the powerplays and over 120 in the middle overs. In the last four overs, their strike rate rises to two runs per ball: Sharma scores 198.26, Kohli 205.52. Both players are relatively slow on the blocks and prefer to stabilize before moving on to higher speeds. While there is a risk factor in this approach – the team suffers if the batsman is out during that period but before he bowls – the upside is very high if they convert these starts: among Indian players, strike rates of Kohli and Sharma in death overs occupy the top two places (with a minimum limit of 500 runs). Overall, only AB de Villiers (233.08) and Andre Russell (218.03) hit a faster pace than them in this period. Like his batting percentages, his boundary balls and run percentage are also similar. While Kohli plays fewer runs in all three phases of an innings (46%, 29% and 21% start-to-finish respectively, against Sharma’s 52%, 32% and 25%), Sharma exceeds the counting limits in the powerplays (one limit every 5.6 balls, up to Kohli’s 6). Overall in their IPL careers, Sharma’s ball percentage is 36.16 against Kohli’s 33.62, but he hits a boundary once in 5.96 balls against Kohli’s 6.38.

How to keep them calm Legspinners were the favorite bowlers of IPL teams when they faced Sharma and Kohli. Sharma has generally struggled with leg spin: his struggles on this front were particularly notable in the 2017 edition, when he was sent off six times for leg spin after returning from a six-month injury. In his IPL career, Sharma has an average of 27.13 against legspinners and a strike rate of 113.24. While there is a perception that Kohli is weak against legspinners, the numbers tell a different story. He averages 53.56 and hits at 142.35
