God is seen as the main source of colonialism – a private man’s club, with an emphasis on order and laws and a white, privileged, male view of life. Winning the World Championship at Lord’s means winning against all that stands.

The tension was evident from the start: when India were about to play the first Test, and England in India. The first series organized for 1930–31 coincided with the outbreak of civil disobedience movements in India, including the Salt Satyagraha. When Mahatma Gandhi marched from the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad to Dandi to protest the draconian British laws on the salt industry – thus “shaking the foundations of the British Empire”, as he said, there was outrage in India that England had banned the cricket team. Interestingly, the MCC decided not to include Duleep’s uncle Ranjitsinhji in the Lord’s Test against Australia in the 1895-96 season, thirty years before Duleep and Nawab were not selected despite being eligible. MCC President Lord Harris expressed confidence that only cricketers will be selected. “This, depending on how you look at it, is either hypocrisy or racism,” Guha said. “Don Harris was himself born in the West Indies.”

After 10 Tests at Lord’s – eight defeats and two draws – India finally won in 1986, their second in 33 Tests in England. Off the field too, India began to pull its weight, co-hosting the next World Cup with Pakistan in 1987 and reaching the final at Lord’s for the first time.

Ironically, it was 19 years after the 1983 final that India played another limited overs match there. Lords. Jagmohan Dalmiya to be the president of ICC? Will the center of cricket move from London to Mumbai? The story of cricket, not just Indian cricket, could have been very different.
