Batsman and wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, who shared the dressing room with both the players during their stint in the Indian team, shed light on the decline in the duo’s performances. In a discussion on a pre-match concert for the third and final ODI between India and South Africa, Karthik said the absence of Mahendra Singh Dhoni played a major role in the duo’s decline.
“100 per cent. I think when it comes to his bowling, it has sunk because someone like MS Dhoni is not there, definitely,” Karthik told Cricbuzz.

“Because I saw how much it helped them. They don’t need help when the pace is going well or they throw and get hit, or when they don’t know which way the bowl is going to turn. But when somebody takes a slow sweep or just plays a reverse sweep, then you have wise words of wisdom coming from someone with so much experience and so much love. They are worth their weight (of Dhoni’s words) in gold. They trust him completely.”
