South Africa’s hopes of direct qualification for the ODI World Cup later this year were dealt a blow after one of their Super League matches was halted to manage low fees when they beat England in the third ODI in Kimberley. West Indies with 88 points are the only place currently open, while South Africa (78), Sri Lanka (77) and Ireland (68) are also open.

The 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup will have 14 teams after the ICC Board decided to extend the tournament by four years in the next cycle. The decision comes after the meeting made significant changes to the ICC calendar for the period 2023-2031. . The Champions Trophy will return in 2017, an event for the top eight ODI teams, and will make its first appearance in 2025 and again in 2029. The ICC Board also decided to continue with the format of the World Test. Championship (WTC) where nine teams play six series each to compete in the biennial final: these will be held in 2025, 2027, 2029 and 2031. The beginning of the WTC will end at the end of India and New Zealand. June 18-22 in Southampton. The second round will begin immediately after the title fight.

The most significant development, however, is the expansion of the 2027 and 2031 ODI World Cups, which will now have 54 matches each. Calls for a bigger World Cup have not started since the 2015 edition when it was decided that participation would be reduced to 10 teams. As it stands now – cricket has flip-flopped for much of its first event – the 2023 World Cup will be the last time India has 10 teams for at least a decade. Revert to the 2003 edition with the Super 6 stage where the top three teams go from two teams of seven. It will be followed by the semi-finals and final. It is not clear what this expansion will mean for the 13-team ODI Super League. Now that the league is on track for the World Cup, the hosts (in this case India) and the top seven teams in the league will advance to the 2023 tournament, with the two teams’ additional categories determined by qualification as covered below. With five teams from the league and the top five associates, the T20 World Cup is seen by the ICC as a vehicle to expand the game, with the top two entrants into the Super Eight stage with the 20 teams spread across four groups of five each. The knockouts followed, including the semifinals and finals. The T20 World Cup will be held in 2024, 2026, 2028 and 2030 and will consist of 55 matches each. The Champions Trophy will continue as before, with eight teams divided into four groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals, followed by the final. “Confirming the ICC event until 2031 is an important step for cricket and will form the basis of our development for the next decade,” said Jeff Allardyce of the ICC.
