Tens of millions of sports fans across South Asia will have their eyes and ears on one thing on Saturday: the much-anticipated Cricket World Cup match between hosts India and arch-rivals Pakistan.

Pakistan are in India for the first time since the 2016 T20 World Cup, and it took a high-profile intervention this week to allow Pakistani journalists and supporters to travel to India for Narendra Modi’s 134,000-capacity round-robin game at the Ahmedabad Stadium.

Poor attendance and poor organization were the main talking points of the tournament that started just eight days ago. India have had no problem attracting crowds, but Indian locals have stayed away from other games. Pakistan played their first matches in Hyderabad, beating Holland by 81 runs and Sri Lanka by six wickets in a record-breaking batting under lights.
“Seven nil is in the past and that’s a record that can be broken,” Pakistan captain Babar Azam said. “People were calling me for tickets to the game, nobody called me about this record.

“We have been enjoying a lot of support in Hyderabad for a week and a half. But we expect this stadium to be blue (for India on Saturday).
India’s opener Shubman Gill, who was sidelined with dengue fever till now, rejoined the team in Ahmedabad. Gill is said to be “99% fit” on Friday, meaning Ishan Kishan should continue to play alongside Sharma.
India will also toy with the idea of bringing back Ravichandran Ashwin. All-rounder Shardul Thakur played against Afghanistan, but the pitch in Ahmedabad will be slower compared to the beauty of the New Delhi encounter. It’s back on track for Ashwin, who returned with 1-34 in 10 overs against Australia in Chennai.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s batting rotation did wonders against Sri Lanka with Abdullah Shafique scoring a fine hundred on his debut Cricket World Cup. That sends the out-of-form Fakhar Zaman to the bench, at least in the short term, while adding strength to a line-up heavily reliant on Babar and Mohammad Rizwan.

While Rizwan’s 131 won the day against Sri Lanka, Babar is yet to fire. He scored 5 and 10 and faced a total of 33 balls. Babar has a normal record against India. in seven ODIs he has made just 168 runs at an average of 28 without crossing 50 once.
“My world championship was not what it should have been,” Babar said. “Hopefully you’ll see some difference in the next games.”

In one-day internationals, each team can bat for a maximum of 50 overs and the Cricket World Cup follows this format.
If a team loses all its wickets before the completion of 50 overs, that is the end of its innings.
Each bowler can bowl a maximum of 10 overs in an innings, meaning each team must use at least five bowlers.
If the game is affected by rain, sometimes the number of overs is reduced depending on the length of the delay.

All 10 teams participating in the 2023 World Cup have been drawn into one big group and will all play each other once.
In the group stage, teams are awarded two points for a win, one for a draw or draw, and nothing for a loss.
After all 10 teams have played each other, the four teams with the most points advance to the semi-finals. The first place team plays the fourth place team and the second place team plays the third place team.
If the teams are tied in points, the net performance ratio is used as the tiebreaker. This is calculated from the number of runs scored by each team minus the average number of runs scored against them. “Available per over” here means that if the team is out, the number of overs allotted to their score is still the maximum they can face, which will be 50 unless the match is interrupted by rain.
