It was against Chennai Super Kings against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final match of the 11th edition of the Vivo India Premier League on 27 May at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. How did Hotstar roll it out? CEO Ajit Mohan told TNW that they’ve learned a lot from years of running the business and cutting their teeth in nail-biting situations:

One of the first events we covered on Hotstar was the 2015 Cricket World Cup between India and Pakistan. If I remember correctly, we had an electrical problem in the first five minutes. For Hotstar, the first day of a major sporting event had a melting pot of sports streaming. Fortunately, we were able to restore power within minutes.
Supporting millions of simultaneous streams in real-time is not just about building a powerful video streaming platform or content delivery network; It also requires building solid APIs and end-user applications:
I think most conversations are sometimes limited to just talking about video and content delivery network (CDN) infrastructure. But fundamentally, to have a high-quality experience, you need access not only to the video infrastructure, but also to the client applications and APIs. I think this thoughtful approach has been pioneered by the Hot Stars over the past few years. Sports can go from zero to four million passes in less than a second. For most other content categories, there is a smoother curve across multiple hours of streaming. And it basically pressure checks the platform at different levels. Therefore, your applications must be scalable. Applications have different API points to access your content, and you need to make sure that all of these API calls can handle the scaling associated with growth.
I was especially interested to know how these growths to millions of users happen in seconds. It’s because people hear about big turns during tournaments. Mohan explains that Hotstar attracts viewers with simple small features on its mobile app.

We understand that users may not have the time to watch a match from start to finish, but still enjoy viewing the scoreboard on their phone. We provide a lock screen widget that encourages you to start watching the match at the right time. But like most sports, these trigger points (such as the fall of a batted ball in baseball) are routine for millions of fans. It creates waves. In addition, we understand the sports viewing patterns of different types of fans and provide multi-segmented notifications by sending specific notifications based on their interests. For this, audience behavior analysis helps a lot. Mohan reveals what Hotstar has learned from its audience usage data:
For example, we want to know that viewer A is a fan of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and if they don’t watch the match, we can draw them to the stream with an alert about (star batsman) Virat Kohli entering the field with the bat. We know the connection between geography and team affiliation. We know whether fans react to a pitch (similar to hitting a baseball) or fourth-and-six (similar to a home run). We know what kind of fans get behind a tight end. There are dozens of different parameters based on these alerts. The retention team has a dedicated group that focuses on these segmented alerts. All the trick is to create a custom alert using an algorithm.
We consider a lot of data modeling to drive performance. So, when it comes to cricket, the number of people tuning the first ball of the match dictates the curve (more than users accessing the live stream). Then you regularly update your traffic forecast based on what’s happening. Our data told us that we are on par with over 10 million viewers for the last match of the last IPL tournament.
