BCCI has a long history of misbehaving with its officials. There have been instances of multiple captains in the same Test series, captains being dropped from teams entirely in the middle of the series and captains hearing from the media that they have been dropped.

This becomes especially important when the information is provided by an organization that performs public functions and is intended for the public. BCCI announced that Virat Kohli’s sacking as the captain of ODI Team India is a good example of how it should not be done.
The Cricket Board recently released a press release announcing the Test squad for the tour of South Africa. The last line of the statement – almost like a comment – said that a new ODI captain had been appointed to replace Kohli. The last line of the press release signed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah reads: “The Central Selection Committee of India has also decided to appoint Mr. Rohit Sharma as the captain of the ODI and T20I teams in the future.”
The only real thing about the words is probably the name of the new captain. The worst part is the use of “too”. It seemed to try to minimize the important issue, decided at the last minute: “Oh, there is one samosa left. Let’s finish this too. ‘No reason was given, no explanation was given.
The removal of the ODI captain by far the most successful ODI captain in statistics – he scored 65 in 95 matches, a success rate of 70.43% – was portrayed as a child who told his teammates “too” to have tea when he returned with important files. Regular football watchers and commentators know that waiting for a press conference with the BCCI/selectors to explain their decisions and opinions is desirable. But what made things worse were various reports based on sources that tried to justify the dismissal by trying to blame Kohli.
Bcci And Selectors Were Waiting For Virat Kohli To Quit As Odi Captain
The statement did not go down well with many and amid criticism, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly also pointed the finger at Kohli. “We had asked Virat to step down as T20 captaincy but he didn’t want to continue. So the selectors felt that they can’t have two white-ball captains in two formats of the ball. There is too much leadership,” Ganguly told PTI.
What Ganguly and others really got wrong is that the issue here is not Kohli’s removal as ODI captain but what was done.
Neither Kohli giving up the captaincy somehow nor BCCI not exercising its right to appoint someone as captain is the issue here. The problem is that the organization failed to show that it appreciates the services of the player who is “also” one of the winners. Kohli is not just a ‘player’. He is the best player of his generation (averaging 50+ in three games) and the best football player today. This truth is not about getting him special treatment but about asking for the respect he deserves.
“This is a very unusual behavior by the world’s biggest and richest cricket board. But it is clearly bankrupt in terms of dealing with its heroes and cricketers who have contributed a lot to the game of cricket in India,” he said. says Vijay Lokapally, a veteran sports journalist and author of several books, including “Driven: The Virat Kohli Story”. “It’s not just a lack of communication, it’s disrespectful to the man. The next day you put out a tweet. It shows how cruel you are.”

But one would have expected that to change after the appointment of the former captain as the director, who himself has just finished being welcomed by the famous BCCI. Ganguly can attest that it’s more than getting fired, it’s how it’s done that hurts. Yet that is exactly what the BCCI under its president has done. Cricket is a sensation in India. Millions of people here are madly in love with the sport and its stars.
Being the governing body of the sport in the country, the BCCI should recognize and respect that sentiment, even if they don’t want to be swayed by it. By reducing Kohli’s removal as ODI captain to the bottom of the page, the BCCI has discredited that perception and shown that the days of good management are not far behind.
