Two of the greatest players in Indian cricket, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, will face each other in the opening match of IPL 2021. How do they stack up for IPL batting and captaincy? Here’s the lowdown.

Captain Log Sharma was part of a record six winning campaigns (with Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians), including five as captain of Mumbai Indians. Under Sharma, Mumbai Indians were the most successful in the league, winning 68 out of 116 matches. However, Sharma’s bitter performance as captain is no exception. He averages 30.25 as captain, compared to 32.91 without captaincy. Kohli is one of only four IPL captains with 100-plus caps – he is the only one on this list who has not won the title.

Kohli’s overall losing record as IPL captain is not good either. Royal Challengers have won only 55 games out of 125 among them. However, as a batsman, not many can match Kohli’s consistency and impact. He is the leading run-scorer in the tournament and holds the record for most runs as a captain. Kohli’s average as captain of 43.88 is second only to David Warner (49.01) among those with 1000 plus runs as captain, and ahead of his IPL average before taking over the Royal Challengers (26.96).
The impact on team and bat Mumbai Indians depends more on Sharma’s batting than Royal Challengers on Kohli. While Sharma takes himself through the batting process, Kohli is a professional of the highest order. He only scored outside the top three four times for the Royal Challengers, scoring 22.93% of the team’s total runs. On the other hand, more than 40% of Sharma’s career as a captain was spent outside the top three. He has stuck with the opening times place for the last two seasons, but has yet to achieve a high level of consistency or run volume. However, when he scored, Mumbai Indians’ chances of winning were higher: only seven of his 22 runs as captain resulted in defeat, and he was man of the match 12 of the 15 times he scored a fifty in scored a victory. .Kohli was also instrumental in the Royal Challengers victory, scoring a quarter of the team’s runs in those matches. Kohli’s batting average as a winning captain stands at 64.02, with four centuries and twenty-five in 55 victories.
How they build their innings The playing styles of Sharma and Kohli are similar if you look at their batting averages at different stages of the IPL innings. Both score at a strike rate of just over 110 in the powerplays and 120-plus during the middle stages. In the last four overs, their strike rate rises to two runs a ball: Sharma scores at 198.26, Kohli at 205.52. Both players are slow in the blocks, and like to settle down before shifting into high gear. Although there is a risk in this approach – the team suffers if the batsman comes out well in this period, but before he separates – it is much higher if they change this start: among the Indian players, the strike rate of Kohli and Sharma in the death overview occupy the top two positions (of at least 500 runs). Overall, only AB de Villiers (233.08) and Andre Russell (218.03) batted faster than them during this period. Similar to the strike rates, their balls per boundary and dot ball percentage are also similar. While Kohli scores less in the three phases of the innings (46%, 29% and 21% from start to finish respectively, to Sharma’s 52%, 32% and 25%), Sharma cuts the boundary count in powerplays (a boundary every 5.6) balls, on Kohli’s 6). Overall in their IPL career, Sharma’s dot ball percentage is 36.16 to Kohli’s 33.62, but he hits the boundary once every 5.96 balls to Kohli’s 6.38.
How – how can – they end up introducing the legspinners to be the bowlers of the IPL teams against Sharma and Kohli. Sharma, on the whole, has struggled against leg spin – his struggles in this area particularly stand out in the 2017 edition, when he was dismissed six times by the leg spinners after returning from a six-month injury lay-off. In his IPL career, Sharma has an average of 27.13 against leg spinners and a strike average of 113.24. While there is a perception that Kohli is weak against leg spin, the numbers tell a different story. He averages 53.56 and strikes at 142.35 in this type of bowling. However, Kohli’s tendency to fall on his feet has increased of late. In the recent T20I series against England, he got out only twice in five overs, both times through the legs of Adil Rashid. In the last three seasons of the IPL, Kohli has been dismissed six times by leg-spinners but still averages 48.83 against them. However, his strike rate against this type of swing this season is 124.68 – up from 153.67 in the first ten seasons. In the last two IPL seasons, Kohli faced 58 googlies and was dismissed twice. Rather than leg-spin, the numbers suggest that left-arm pace has been Kohli’s weak point in the IPL: he averages just 23.45 and strikes at 132.66 against these bowlers, and has been dismissed once in 17 balls against them.

‘It’s a quality Sachin had’: Harbhajan compares young Indian to Tendulkar, rates him as high as Kohli, Rohit
Former spinner Harbhajan Singh praised the 22-year-old Indian batsman, comparing him to Sachin Tendulkar and putting him at the same level as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

The legendary Sachin Tendulkar, along with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are the three greatest batting heroes in the history of Indian cricket. Their popularity is unmatched by fans and records. While Tendulkar was the bright boy of Indian cricket from the 1990s to 2010s, Rohit and Kohli have taken cricket global in the current era. As for the next generation of Indian cricketers like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill etc. they have what it takes to make it big. But will they taste the kind of success that Tendulkar, Rohit or Kohli did is something only time will tell.

Having said that, former Indian bowler Harbhajan Singh has reserved young Indian batsman Gill. The 22-year-old, who saw Harbhajan up close when he played for Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, scored his maiden century for India against Zimbabwe during the third ODI of the series in Harare, taking three wickets . -calculate points after several approaches. Gill missed out on a Test century in Brisbane 2021, when he was dismissed for 91 against Australia, and more recently in the West Indies, where he was restricted to 98 not out.
In the last two series, Gill has shown incredible consistency, scoring over 400 runs in nine innings at a healthy average, and it was fitting that the guy broke the jinx and hit his maiden ton. Gill’s performance impressed Harbhajan so much that the former Indian spinner did not hesitate to put him in the same category as Rohit and Kohli.
