Virat Kohli added another mark on Monday as he surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 13,000 ODI runs to become the fastest run-getter in the Asia Cup 2023 Super Four between India and Pakistan. Resuming his innings from the previous evening, the former India captain started with a 55-ball 55 and needed just 29 more to complete his 47th ODI century. In this, Kohli surpassed the legendary Tendulkar and reached his innings of 267, making him the fastest batsman to 8000, 9000, 10000, 11000, 120000 and now 13000 ODI runs.
Kohli completed the 13 km run in 54 innings less than Tendulkar (321 innings), adding weight to the Virat-Sachin debate. Kohli’s 47th century means he is now on the verge of testing his stature for ODI centuries and is three away from surpassing the great man’s 50 a day, which is an achievement in itself. Kohli’s love affair with Pakistan enabled India to post a mammoth score of 356/2, with KL Rahul scoring a century, the sixth of his ODI career. Kohli and Rahul added an unbeaten 233 runs for the third wicket, which is the highest for any wicket in Asia Cup history. It is also Kohli’s fourth consecutive century at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Before the game, Kohli’s 12902 runs required 98 runs, eight of which were lost on Sunday as rain ensured no play was possible after 24.1 overs and India scored 147/2. And on Monday, while at the top combat belt, he competed. One scathing review described the contest between Kohli’s century and India’s target as “the first close game of this World Cup”.
Some even said that Kohli has the right to watch the innings as he pleases because “India will never lose”.

However, former Pakistan all-rounder Wasim Akram praised Kohli for switching gears with ease as he moved towards his first World Cup goal and third place in all World Cup matches.
“They [Kohli and Rahul] had fun batting, played with the bowlers and ran well,” Akram said on a television program when asked about Kohli’s criticism.
“He [Kohli] ran twice as fast in the 80s and 90s despite playing 50 overs, which is incredible,” Akram said.
