Virat Kohli surpassed fellow Indian Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most international centuries after reaching his 49th ton in the form.

Kohli hit a first-ball 119 against South Africa in Kolkata at the Cricket World Cup on Sunday, the day he made 35 and in a match that saw his team score 243 runs after skidding their opponents for 83 in a row.

Kohli – who averages 58.48 in ODI cricket – needed just 277 innings to score his 49th century, compared to 451 for Tendulkar.
Kohli’s team-mate Rohit Sharma is third on the all-time list with 31 centuries, followed by former Australian bowler Ricky Ponting (30) and former Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya (28).

Speaking after his unbeaten 101 off 121 balls to take India to an unbeaten 326-5 against South Africa at a packed Eden Gardens, Kohli said: “It’s a great opportunity for me to play for India.

“It’s an emotional moment. I know where I’m from and I’ve seen him on TV. He respects me a lot.”

Kohli’s century against South Africa was his second of this World Cup and the right-hander scored 103, but not against Bangladesh in Pune.
India have won eight World Cup matches so far, beating Australia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand, England, Sri Lanka and now South Africa.

India, who are trying to repeat their World Cup victory on home soil in 2011, sealed the title 12 years ago with a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the final.

Since then, he has enjoyed a remarkable comeback, with six centuries in 2023 so far – the most in a calendar year along with 2017 and 2018.
Kohli scored 711 runs in India’s unstoppable bid to win the World Cup at home, his score in the tournament surpassing Tendulkar’s previous record of 673 set in 2003.
