Such is the modern cricket calendar that India’s failure at the T20 World Cup is barely reviewed while a much bigger event is already on their doorstep: the 50-over World Cup at home next October and November. India are not yet officially on the road to the 2023 ODI World Cup as they currently have no national selectors and they will decide the direction of the team in consultation with the team management. However, with three of the first 21 ODIs of the World Cup kicking off in New Zealand this Friday, the focus needs to shift quickly after three years of keeping the 50-over format at third place in the priority list. India have played just 39 matches since the 2019 World Cup, with just six players playing 20 or more ODIs due to injury or workload management. Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja played 18 matches each, Jasprit Bumrah played 14 matches and Hardik Pandya played 12 matches. India tried 44 players during this period. That’s enough to show that India haven’t had a game yet. They hope to take this tough team to the World Cup. At the same time, a wealth of new options have emerged. We’ll get a clearer idea of the team’s tendencies soon, but the selectors won’t find it easy. Here’s how crowded the 15 spots in the World Cup squad are. The scheme implemented in the next three years produced excellent results for Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. Hardik Pandya will be the winner, especially if he can give India a five-wicket win in every game. Here are the mid-level candidates in more detail. All-rounders Apart from Hardik, India also have a number of spin bowling all-rounders to choose from. He should be India’s first choice once Ravindra Jadeja recovers, but there will be opportunities for others to stake their claim in his absence. Others: Shahbaz Ahmed spinner Since the all-round spinner is likely to be a defensive player, India will be looking for attacking qualities in another spinner. This should zero in on two names: wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. Both are in New Zealand but have been rested for the ODIs in Bangladesh and India can extend the batting order by fielding two spin all-rounders. Yuzvendra Chahal M 18, W 34, ER 5.6, SR 28 India’s top wicket-taker – the winner has scored one goal every 28 balls since the 2019 World Cup. Unlucky not to have played in the last two T20 World Cups. Kuldeep Yadav M 21, W 25, ER 5.8, SR 45 Slowly returning to international cricket after a huge dip in confidence. The left arm wrist pin could be a point of difference.
It was another muddy pitch for the fast bowlers as India failed to bring out the best of their combination. A fit Jasprit Bumrah should walk in. Prasidh Krishna has emerged as a strong candidate to bowl uncomfortable deliveries in the middle overs. Shardul Thakur lost a run but took a wicket. Ardeep Singh will be hard to ignore. Mohammad Siraj also performed well. Does India need a swing bowler like Bhuvneshwar Kumar or Deepak Chahar? Mohammad Shami is not far away from final promotion. Kuldeep Sen has been sent to Bangladesh. Umran Malik is currently in the New Zealand team. Jasprit Bumrah M 14, W 18, ER 5.2, SR 44 His goalscoring rate has been high recently, but his quality is unquestionable. Prasidh Krishna M 14, W 25, ER 5.3, SR 27 India have invested heavily in him to play a similar role to Mark Wood and his performance is evident from his excellent strike rate of 27 outstanding. Mohammed Siraj M 12, W 18, ER 4.5, SR 32 A capable wicket taker who can bowl to uncomfortable lengths. Arshdeep Singh, a left-arm angle, has proven himself in T20s despite yet to make his ODI debut. He also has no A-list domestic game works. This is where Chahar and Thakur come into play. Bhuvneshwar’s experience cannot be underestimated, but he is a slightly worse batsman than the other two.
